English - Creative Writing
This course will provide an introduction to writing poetry, short fiction, and drama. Through study of existing literature, the student will learn the fundamentals of successful writing in each of these genres, and through frequent exercises and daily home assignments, the student will acquire necessary writing skills and follow the steps of the writing process. This course will enable the student to independently produce a culminating project of either a short story or a script of a one act play, from initial organization of ideas and first draft, through self-critique and redraft, to final.
In conformity with Pennsylvania and New Jersey Academic Standards, this course will focus on the writing process, while helping students to develop their imaginations and desire to experiment. The students will achieve mastery of the steps of the writing process, and achieve a foundation in writing poetry, short fiction, and drama. Each student will understand, and provide evidence of that understanding, by incorporating in his/her writing the essentials of theme, character, imagery/symbolism, plot, and point of view.
